Why You Need to Be Aware of Your Digital Footprint

9 May 2016 By Jim Mullaney

As our mobile phones and social media become increasingly integrated into our lives, the danger exists that these technologies could be used against you in court. By now, most everyone has heard of the FBI’s attempt to have Apple unlock a terrorist’s iPhone. What most people don’t consider is there own digital life – or footprint – and how it could be used against them in court.

I could write a long article about the dangers of Facebook in a family law case. However, I think the following infographic by a Maryland law firm better illustrates the dangers posed in a family law case by all aspects of your digital like – not just Facebook.

In a litigated divorce case, all of your social media posts, voice messages, text messages, videos, call logs, photos, blog comments and more are discoverable by your spouse’s lawyer.
